Wangari Maathai began planting trees in her backyard in Nyeri and ended up winning the Nobel Peace Prize. In between, she built the Green Belt Movement, was beaten by police, divorced by a husband who said she was too strong-minded for a woman, and stood in the path of developers trying to build on Uhuru Park. This trail follows the biologist who understood that environmental destruction and political oppression are the same fight - and that women planting seedlings could be an act of revolution.
