Trans-Nzoia County is Kenya's "breadbasket" (one of the country's most productive agricultural regions). Located in the western highlands on the Uganda border, it is home to approximately 1.1 million people. The county is known for maize, wheat, and sunflower production. Kitale serves as the county headquarters and main commercial hub. Mount Elgon dominates the western landscape on the Uganda border. The county has a complex ethnic composition including Sabaot (Kalenjin), Luhya (Bukusu and other sub-groups), Kikuyu settlers, Luo, and other communities.

Overview

The county economy is anchored in agriculture, with the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) maintaining major silos at Kitale. Beyond cereals, the county produces dairy, sunflower oil, and pyrethrum. The cool, high-rainfall highland climate creates ideal conditions for diverse crops. Trans-Nzoia experienced significant European settlement during the colonial period (the White Highlands era), which shaped current land ownership patterns and ethnic demographics.
